Why Now?

Updated: Aug 23, 2018

This is a question I've asked myself for a little while now: why create a website now? I don't have a full time job (yet), and I'm not quite gigging enough in my own mind to think having a website is really worth it. Or a music specific Instagram. So, when is the best time for me to create a social media following for myself as a freelance musician? That is the exact question I asked Mark Meadows when he was at The National Jazz Workshop talking about the music business. The short answer he gave was to do it now, start as early as possible and just post. Get it out there, create content for site visitors. Put up posts similar to promo videos so that when people do come to see "oh I was just recommended this Max Levowitz guy, lets see whats on his website" and things of that nature, then there would be something for them to see. Another person told me to just be honest on my website and Instagram, post things of me working on my craft.

In my previous post I mentioned making connections and getting to know people. In 2018, making connections and getting to know people is assisted and augmented by social media and the internet. Having a website and social media platforms are both huge components, especially as a freelancer. You need to be able to put yourself out there and build up some content so that people can see who you are and what you are doing. Justin Bieber might be the best example. Hate him or love him, I can't think of somebody who best embodies the twenty-first century freelance world better than him. According to his biography, Justin was discovered because his mom posted videos of him on YouTube singing covers to share with his family. "Within months, Justin was an Internet sensation, with a large following of fans and an eager manager arranging for the teenager to fly to Atlanta to consider a record deal." If that doesn't embody the age of technology in which we live I don't know what does.

So, here I am. Twenty-three years old, publishing my website that my amazing dad created for me for Christmas a few years ago. I have created an Instagram specifically for my musical adventures, and a Facebook page as well. I'm going to use this blog sparingly, but I wanted to get a few posts out there about who I am, what I'm doing, and why I'm doing exactly what I'm doing. I'm here to be honest with myself and with anyone who looks at this website.
